A
beautifully crafted work of art LINER NOTES CD BY MANUEL
HAMERLINK
I
have known Ximo Tebar for many years now. Since the early
days when he used to sit in wherever there was a jam session
in town and made himself known on the local jazz scene,
he has been working with body and soul on building his
own musical career. Today he is regarded as one of the
most prominent Đ and certainly one of the best-known Đ
jazz musicians in Spain. Although he is deeply rooted
in the jazz tradition he has been one of the first Spanish
jazzmen to open his music to other styles. He has quite
successfully managed to mix the traditional jazz idiom
with more Latin-tinged influences, especially from the
Mediterranean, and has achieved a true voice of his own
which is immediately recognizable (He is often referred
to the creator of the "SON MEDITERRANEO"). He is a tireless
worker who has been awarded almost any imaginable prize
in his native country and has got rave reviews both in
Spain and abroad. Besides his busy concert schedule he
still has time to be the director of Promsics, the Valencian
association of jazz musicians, to set up his own record
seal, to run a music school (Aula de Musica Alameda),
to produce other jazz artists, etc. Embrujado is XimoŐs
tenth recording. As in the case of his previous recordings
this is more a project than as product and Ximo decided
that this CD should be released exactly on his 40th birthday.
He can of course do so because heŐs the boss at his own
record company. We all know itŐs not an easy thing to
do because artists donŐt usually have any power of decision
in multinational recording companies if they donŐt "sell"
well. I know that he has recorded this CD in pretty humble
conditions but I think that the final result is comparable
to great productions in every way: sound, credits, collaborations,
production, etc. This certainly proves that the man behind
the project is a wonderful, professional, serious musician
who knows everything about the music industry and is highly
respected by his fellow musicians in the business. This
CD may disdainfully be labelled as being too "commercial"
by orthodox jazz purists. However, the richness of its
music and the vast array of little details that can be
heard on the CD are the result of an impressive effort
on the levels of writing, arranging, orchestration and
production. Curious and innovative details such as the
use of sections made up of trumpets and voices instead
of the usual horn sections (trumpet, saxophone and trombone),
or the treatment of different programmings which perfectly
blend into an acoustic jazz atmosphere, the homogeneity
and good taste in the fusion of styles, the featured artists,
etc. Even the content and the design of the booklet with
XimoŐs comments on each piece show that this is a beautifully
crafted work of art, carefully planned and accessible
to all kinds of audiences. It definitely consolidates
Ximo as one of this countryŐs foremost creators. Happy
birthday, Ximo!

"Embrujado
can take Ximo to a wider audience, which will enjoy his
original idea of fusion, combining jazz, funk, pop and
Latin music. And all this with a distinctive Mediterranean
touch." Cosmopolitan, Sep. 03
"Ximo
Tebar's music offers an authentic and personal sound which
distinguishes him as the creator of the 'Son Mediterraneo'.
In constant search of an original sound, his last release
Embrujado plunges into a fusion of jazz, funk, pop and
Latin music with a blend of electronic and acoustic sounds."

definitely hits the point by mixing sequences of pure
